Purpose: To lead an engineering team in Birmingham in the design of buildings, footbridges and other miscellaneous structures within a rail environment supporting the Contract manager and Project Managers in delivery of all technical aspects of projects.

Key Result Areas: Delivery of designs in accordance with the Client�s requirements and appropriate design standards using cost effective methods of analysis and design. Assist in the development of innovative ways of providing design services and supervising the work of other less experienced staff.

PTS or other track safety qualifications (desirable)


Responsibilities
To take on the responsibility for the technical quality of building and ancillary structures projects carried out by or on behalf of the design team
To supervise and check the work of less experienced staff and to take part in the professional development of those staff
Manage the competency appraisal processes for structural designers in Birmingham and liaise with the Head of Engineering
Act as Contractor�s Responsible Engineer and Contractor�s Engineering Manager when required to do so
Conceptual and outline design of engineering solutions, presentation of engineering options
Preparation, checking and/or approval of feasibility studies, technical reports and other written documents
Preparation/checking of design calculations, structural analysis
Production and approval of design concepts, drawings, specifications and other technical documents
Management of teams of engineers and external suppliers
Delivery of work to programme, budget and specification
Training and development, mentoring of less experinced staff
Planning, monitoring and reporting of project resources and finances
Representing the company on technical matters
Contribute to marketing and business development of the structures team maintaining positive relationships with our key clients and developing relationships with new clients


The Individual
Post-graduate relevant experience in the design of bridge plus a experience of civil engineering practice
Experience in the rail industry and knowledge of railways standards is essential in particular the design and construction of repairs, refurbishment or replacement of bridges in an operational railway environment
The Jobholder should be computer literate and thoroughly conversant with MS Office suite and experienced in the use of structural analysis software (Super STRESS, ASAS and Archie) and Project Management software (P3, Suretrack or MS Project)
The Jobholder should also be familiar with production of drawings using AutoCAD or Microstation
